Hello, I'm trying to change the pressure relief valve on my Megaflo. I've got the right replacement part, I've drained the boiler. The old valve has corroded so when i unscrewed it, the black plastic housing came away from the rest, leaving most of the valve stuck in. I can't seem to get it out, I've tried pulling on the central metal rod with some pliers but with no joy. Are these things just meant to pull out once unscrewed, or is there some other trick to it.

Any idea's? Thanks.

I'm sure your not ment to be working on a unvented cylinder without the appropriate qualification.

:?

it was wrong, leaking from the pressure relief valve. Looking at the literature it says with this fault, it's a simple replacement, one out one in.

I have already paid £60 call out charge for a plumber who didn't have the right "ticket" to touch it. I've forked out another £60 on the part. I'm going to have to sort it out myself, because everyone I call doesn't do Megaflo.

I know it's far from ideal, but thats the choice i'm left with. Thanks for your advice anyway, really, i know they're tricky, it's not something i really want to be sorting, but, getting a pro in is impossible.

But if anyone has done this job before, once they're unscrewed, do they just pull out, or do they require a bit of oomph?

Thanks.

You mean it was leaking into the turndish? You did try and recharge the air gap first didnt you?

Its the pressure reducing valve cartridge, it's not on the cylinder. It isn't the temperature/pressure release valve.

You have made a lot of posts saying the pressure relief valve was leaking!

Then you decide it was the pressure reducing valve!

You really dont seem to know what you are doing!

In the normal course of events I would say that the plumber should not have come to you if he did not have the right qualifications and should not have been paid if he did.

However, if you also wrongly described the cylinder then its quite possible he had no idea from the description what he was coming to look at.

Why did you drain the boiler?

Sorry, pressure reducing valve cartridge. You are right, i'm no expert. I'm not trying to be cocky either, honestly. I would much rather have an expert to do it, but finding one is impossible, even though i'm sure they exist.

I drained the boiler, because if i remove the pressure reducing valve cartridge with the water pressure on, the water would pour out.

I am sorry if i'm coming across rude, I don't mean to, but I am having some difficulties here.

Thanks.

Dont you mean that you drained the cylinder then?

The boiler is the appliance which burns gas to heat the rads and the cylinder.

Unfortunately I dont really understand what you have done to the pressure reducing valve. But even if I did, the forum does not expect me to give DIY advice on gas or unventeds as they should only be worked on by qualified people.

It seems you have only bought the cartridge. A possible but more expensive solution would be for you to buy the complete combination valve.

Tony

Thanks Tony, in hindsight i would have bought the whole valve, and i probably will end up doing so. I'll give the cartridge's another go in the morning first.

Yeah, its a cylinder/water heater, not a boiler, sorry, it's clearly not my area of expertise. But i'm sure i'm missing a simple trick to get this old cartridge out.

Unventeds eh, i should have got a ticket lol.
