Megaflow ? Always on or timed

we have a megaflow and its fab to be honest but i was wondering the best way to heat it, for cost effectivness. Is it best to leave the megaflow on all the time or should we put it on timed, i have been told varying ways ,
any ideas,

Assuming it is indirect (heated by a boiler), then if you leave it on all the time you won't actually be the heating the cylinder all time, only when you use some hot water, or it has been off for ages and the temperature drops and makes the cylinder stat kick in.

If it is direct (immersion heated) then only set it to come on in the off peak period, topping up if needed by the top immersion which is usually connected to a seperate switch or boost button on your timer.
