Please can I ask if anyone knows what these 4qty metal rods are behind an old gas fire place. There was a brick surround and when removed found the thick metal rods bent. I'm not sure what they are holding and if it's safe to cut them flush off.

Rods? They look like nails to me.

Best guess is they were previously holding something but it's not there any more, and someone walloped them flat.

You may be able to lever them out. Put a trowel or flat against the plaster to lever against so you don't big a hole in it.

Thanks for the reply. The fireplace and bricks were put in when the house was built.

OP,
No need to cut them off, you could probably wriggle them free?
They are wrought iron fixing pins, their original purpose was to be used as secret fixings, catching slot plates or lugs in some kind of metal or wood surround. They were typically driven into mortar beds.
FWIW: there's a great video on utub of a blacksmith in his forge hammering out similar studs.

How old is your house? Do you have a pic of the old brick surround?

Depending on what your purpose is there are a couple of things in your pics that might need investigating?

OP,
I give up - there was no need for the pins in that fire surround. For what else they were installed I dont know.

Just old cut nails as used in floor boards, bend up and down a couple of times to snap them off.

Do you know why they were put in, for what purpose? The way they are bent up as if they are supporting something behind.

Probably holding a timber on the wall ,( fire surround .)but unimportant. Bent up out of the way , not holding anything.

Thanks. So probably before the fire was installed there was something there. They then took it away to install the fire and bent the nails up. I was there when the fire came out and the nails were already bent back.

OP,
The "rods" or pins should wriggle out easy enough but you could always apply a little leverage.

Do you know for certain that this was original?

Is it possible that the builder put a simple timber surround in, then this was added by the first owner immediately after buying it?

These things were a huge fashion in the 1980s, they were mass produced kits. Yours looked like it came from the same factory as ours!

I'm keeping ours until it becomes trendy again. Not.

Thank you for all your replies. Maybe the brick surround was added after the house was built.

I doubt that any builder would have included one, these were the height of luxury at that time!

The four nails were probably for the original simple (cheap!) surround.

As said, clenched-over cut nails. Just crow 'em out. We used to use them way back when, in place of regular nails because they gripped much better to block-work, whereas regular nails would spring back out, if the timber offered resistance. Cut nails always pulled the timber in.
