Metal socket boxes, earth required?

I've got some metal sockets - both the face-plate and wall-mounting box (surface mounted, not recessed into the wall) are steel. These boxes all have earth terminals in the mounting box and my understanding is that this is because the box, being metal, is a conductor - right?

Is the idea I would simply wire everything up as normal, and then add an additional piece of wire from the socket's earth to the box's earth, i.e. a 2 inch bit of earth wire?
