Having not used the metal spike repair before I have just watched a demonstration by an American DIY site of a man repairing a rotten fence post with a metal spike. After leveling the stub of the old post he drove the spike through the center of it, thus enabling him to attach a new post with digging the old one out. Is this the normal way that these spikes should be used or do we do it differently.
