Metal unslotted basin waste to 32mm

Just a quick one, I'm fitting a hand basin with a metal "plug hole", the type that has no plug, do I need an adapter to connect it to a plastic P trap? The nut on the P trap seem very loose on the thread of the waste and I can't get it to seal or tighten properly.

Sounds like your basin waste may be a European size. If so you need a conversion coupling. Did you buy it on the internet ?
McAlpine code S12A/F as an example.

Thanks Terryplumb, it came with the basin. I've sent the wife to get another one anyway and to pick up the McAlpine S12A/F adapter while she is out too as its less than £2. Should give me double the chance of getting it right if it is just because my plug hole is foreign.
