Meter serial numbers

Who could have resisted the temptation to exasperate them in response to their numptiness by giving them one of the MAC addresses as the serial number. Then if they reply that that's not the serial number, give them one of the other ones. There are 3 to work through like that.

Then there's what could be Macquarie's asset number. The Landis & Gyr model number. The list of EN standards.

probably way over 99%

Yeah I have had occasion to wonder when a firm asks for a serial number (etc) and there are a few items/codes that might or might not qualify as being the "serial number" but they do not call it as such.
I scoff at the absolute STUPIDITY of calling something by one name yet asking for it as something as another name.
A mere customer/user would not automatically know which ID they need - I have noticed this on a few things by a few different organisations - I do wonder if they are deluded enough to think it makes them look clever to mere mortals - quite the opposite in fact.
Whatever they like to refer it as they should enquire as in exactly the same way - I know often they ask for "Serial Number" when it shows as "S/N" and most of us would guess that one I think but when they state and ask in completely different notations it just makes me think "You Pilchards" .
Abbreviations are another example of this behaviour too, no it does not make them look clever.

Indeed. That, plus the incompetence of not knowing which meters went where are why I would have been one of the <1% who would have given them the runaround with MAC addresses etc.

Yes Morq I think that like me you might be an armchair mild anarchist! supposedly one famous one once you read about his mild acts of non conforming was .............................................. Patrick Moore - apparently dear old Patrick liked to beggar up officialdom with his mild actions - put a stamp on a large envelope so close to the centre that a PO Franking machine couldn`t cope with it and so had to be done by hand or on "Bank Giro Credits" used to pay in cheques etc he used to lightly smear candle wax right on the line where the machine reader had a problem to decipher the account numbers etc and a host of other little things anti-establishment.

My own personal favourite is to follow some instruction exactly to the letter whilst realising it does not make sense but doing exactly what they have insisted you do, cocking up the establishment is a joy doing things like that on jumped up little twits and jobsworths :giggle:
