Currently have a 3-phase cable supplying the house but it seems there is only one of the phases connected to a single phase meter at the moment. The house will need 3-phase available to cater for a large extension and pool, firstly, can the supplier come and replace the single phase meter for a three-phase meter, and do you know if this is free of charge ?

Also, the new meter needs to be in a new position around 15m from the original position. This means that the meter will be quite a distance from the existing DB’s (positioned over the single phase meter), would it be easier to run a sub-main from the new meter to supply the DB or re-locate the DB to the new meter position. Perhaps the voltage drop may be any issue, however all the distribution to the existing circuits are from the existing DB position and presumably it would be a lot of work to re-position the cables.

In your opinion what would be the preferred way?

Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

You need to ask you electricity supplier re costs to provide three phase and/or relocate the feed. They will position the meter immediately adjacent to the cable head.

Please be sitting down when you get thier reply. Volt drop should not be a problem if the cables are sized correctly. Why do you need to move the existing consumer unit?

I would prefer to just move the meter (this is needed as the existing cable would run under a new extension), but keep the existing consumer unit in its existing location. I assume a sub-main can then run from the new meter underground to the existing CU position and any 'new ' CU's (to cater for the extra rooms etc. can be located above the meter)?

Would that be the most simple way forward?

Best to keep existing CU where it is, relocate your supply and run a cable from new meter position to old CU position(size & type depends on a lot of factors). This cable will need to be protected by a switchfuse of the correct size.
IMHO the deisgn & installation of this needs an experienced spark.

The consumer units for the new stuff can be located at the new meter position.
