I am planning on replacing an old mixer shower valve with a new one. It seemed like a straight forward job, but now I'm not too sure.

The old unit has the temp control bit on the right and the new one has this on the left.

If the temperature control knob is on the right or left, does it mean that the hot water supply is connected to that side of the shower valve?

I am not sure which side is the hot water pipe; it was installed from fresh (new run of pipes) by a professional plumber 5 years ago. Any tips on finding out which side is hot water and which is cold? Without removing the bath side board (ideally) as it is tiled in.

When you take the old valve out the inlets should be marked H & C or Red & Blue.

Or run the shower and see which pipe gets hot.
