Modified seatbelt. Can it be put back?

Thanks. Yes, I think will probably go for a replacement. TBH, we rarely have people at the back so could live with it, but as I need to sort it out for the MOT (due in Feb) probably best to try to sort it out now.

I guess my final question would be whether there are places that would just replace the strap for a new one (and for this to somehow be cheaper than a replacement from the scrapper). The mechanism does appear to be fine and everything seems to be working in order.

Don't even THINK it! Just.... NO!

They're locked on to the retractor drum in a variety of ways, none of them suited to being done by hand, to be honest. The tractor drum then has a long "clock spring" to make it wind the slack in, and that will go absolutely everywhere when you try and take it apart (don't ask me how I know this...) ;)

Plan B then:

You do not need to inspect:
a belt fitted with no corresponding seat.

Seats out next test. ;)
Whilst I understand your point, I disagree with you giving suggestions as to how to avoid safety critical items getting tested.

As you know, the test is not actually that stringent, without looking for ways around it.

That seatbelt is DANGEROUS, and under no circumstances, should it be used. Better to remove it so that everybody knows it cannot be used than to leave it there and let it potentially get used.

That’s all you need to do. I’m not interested in any other of your opinions.
Id expect an ex tester to be a bit more prfoessional, rather than giving out bad, and initially incorrect, advice, on an open forum

Do you have no qualms about who might sit in that seat and use the belt unknowingly !

The only advice I have given the OP is to get it fixed properly and I’ve given a link where he may be able to get that done. As you know, testing can only be carried out to the set standards and it not for anyone to second guess what could happen in the future. If you don’t like those standards and the 'work arounds' and you have a problem with that, take it up with the authorities. I’m sure they’ll listen to you…..

Think twice about what advice you have actually given out ! Dangerous !

Higher standards at this end obviously.

There’s only one set of standards that I worked to. The standards. I expect you are one of the nerds that think they know better and are always writing up telling everybody so in 'matters of Testing'.

No

But no way would I suggest to anybody that trying to hide a dangerous seatbbelt is good advice to give to anybody, especially those that don't understand the forces involved in seat belts.

All I expect is professionals, to be professional. Even, an ex tester.

Shockingly bad, and incorrect information given out by you.

You could fix a carving knife to the steering wheel, pointed at your chest.
It won’t fix the seatbelt, but I’ll bet that you drive so carefully that the seatbelt never gets any strain on it.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But more people died in car crashes before we had any seat belts, airbags, energy absorbing steering columns, etc!

Vehicles generally, were much less safe, than they are today, those items you mention, were just a part of the safety package, which includes much safer roads.

You'd need to ask for more pictures and a part number but I'm fairly sure ebay item number 125251294633 is the correct one
Saw that one but didn't think it was the same judging by the belt emitting from a slot encircled by the silver pipe:

But the belt on that eBay one emits from a slot not encircled by the silver pipe:

So, I think this was the problem. I think this was cut to reroute around this pipe and basically make sure that it snagged and didn't retract, instead of going through the plastic slot. See picture for the other side below:

Also, do you have the link for that e-bay posting? I think that might be the one!!

But I guess what I was wondering is that if these guys are pros at this, they probably do it in a way that keeps the belts integrity, right? But should probably give them a call to check

If you ask them for a couple more pictures they should be able to help, maybe see if you can find the part number off yours
