Hi

In our hose the very first post is the same height as the other posts!

Is it possible to retrospectively add something decorative to add to just the first post so it is at a bigger height! If you look at the image in the link below the first post is higher than other posts. Can i achieve that just by adding something on top? If so what do i need (i dont know the name of the thing so finding it difficult to google).

Better post a photo of the actual post. If people can see the problem it's easier for them to help.

Totally different style of stair rail to the wickes pic, you would need to add a wedge to top of post to enable fitting of acorn to top.

A skilled wood worker could do something for you.

It would involve cutting both the newel (maybe lower down) and the bannister rail and extending the newel with a dowelled extender. The bannister would then be fixed to the extended bit.

It would make sense to emphasise the newel join rather than try and hide it i.e. router the edges of the existing newel stump so it looks like you have a deliberate turned unit.
I appreciate the first image shows a different newel post but gives you an idea of how the existing newel stump should be finished.
