Monoblock driveway - Excavation Depth

I'm currently obtaining quotes for the above. I've asked the two companies whom I have already had quotes from how deep they would dig to do the prep. work, and have had quite a difference in their responses.

One said about 200 - 300 mm.

The other said about 600mm.

I realise that the depth will vary from job to job, but roughly what's the minimum depth that should be dug out to give a solid base to lay monblocks.

When I had my drive block-paved they dug out almost 3 feet of soil and put in a very hefty layer of roadstone.

A couple of people in our close had their drives done and, judging by the amount of soil removed they didn't have anywhere near deep enough a base.

The result is that the block-paved drive has blocks that have sunk, particularly along the line of the drains, and the tarmac drive has two nice grooves in it made by their car.

I would advise going with the company that quoted the greater depth of base, but that's just from personal experience. I guess it could depend on the structure of the land where you live (bedrock etc.).
