Hi all,

I'm looking to install some flooring in my flat but need some advice. Apologies if this has been covered before but couldn't find it.

The flat has a slight damp problem - nothing too severe but having taken up the laminate that was previously down there is a musty smell, and damp had stained the chipboard underneath, particularly where it covered an old hearth.

I would prefer to just strip and stain the existing floorboards, because I am assuming that the increased ventilation this allows would help mitigate the damp - including in the walls.

However, the floorboards are not in very good condition, there is an area which has been tiled, and the flat is already quite draughty. Flooring therefore seems to be the best option.

My question is, what is the best way to make sure the sub-floor breathes as much as possible? What type of flooring, and what type of underlay should I be looking at?

All this assumes that I am right that ventilation is the best way to reduce the damp. Would you suggest anything else?

Many thanks in advance,

J.

Carpet will breath better han any other type of flooring BUT the cause of the damp needs identifying, it sounds very excessive.
