We installed some wall slats 2 years ago, the type which is MDF slats on black felt backing. The front of the MDF is faux wood and the sides are exposed black MDF.
After a few months we noticed mould growing on the sides of the slats. The room is high and can occasionally be cold but we don’t have mould elsewhere. I don’t believe the mould is coming from behind the panels.
We cleaned it off and then applied Rustins MDF sealer all over, which seemed to do the job for a year but now the mould is back.
I’m thinking of trying a zinsser product instead, to give a decent clear seal - any suggestions? If this doesn’t work then ultimately we’ll have to rip them all down which I really don’t want to do. I’m surprised no-one else has had this issue with these slats but I’ve found nothing online about it. Thanks for any advice.

You need to increase/create better ventilation/air circulation. Zinsser products are generally very good but they won't achieve the impossible.

Mould spores in the air all the time , ventilation prevents it from settling and keeps wall dryer discouraging growth .
The issue is not the slats but the room conditions .
