Hi,
just moved into an old house that hasnt been lived in for awhile and weve found mould on headboard and bed slats.... also on exterior walls! Please can someone help????
Ta for that
would getting double glazing help as windows are as old as house woodern frames. When we redecorated there was no sign of mould anywhere but as we started heating up the house in the last few weeks it seems to have taken hold... We bleach it every time we see it but it seems never ending. Is there an end in sight??
yes, double glazing will make it worse as it will reduce draughts (ventilation)
as you heat the cold house you will be drying out some of the fabric (wooden floors etc) and the moisture you drive out of these will be condensing on the first cold surface it finds.
Plastering and bricklaying also introduce vast amounts of water into a house. So does washing walls and soaking off wallaper, so does emulsion-painting walls.
Obviously you are not draping wet washing about the house, or having baths and showers with no extractor fan.
Not much point using bleach. Once you get the house dry the mould will die and you can clean it up then.
Spend your money on insulating the loft (and walls if they have cavities) so you can keep it warm; and ventilate it constantly. You can hire a dehumdifier if you want to do one room at a time (close the doors and windows of the room so you are not trying to dehumidify the world)
