moving light switch

Hi all just a quick question I need to move some light switch’s over about a foot.
I know I need to run the new cable up the wall to the ceiling then join the cable above the ceiling and in the void so it will be accessible if needed.

Thing is I have enough 2.5mm twin and earth sitting in the cupboard under the stairs to do the job but is it ok to join 2.5mm cable from the new switch position run it up the wall and join it to the existing 1.5mm cable ?

Yes, but better to replace the cable entirely than join it.
