I'm on Virgin, the phone is on a normal wall socket.
The Tivo box and router need a coaxial cable as you say, I run 1 main cable to the back of the room and this is then split between Tivo and Superhub 2.
You could have the router under the stairs but you would still need to run a coax to the TV area.
Not worth the effort if you aren't planning on changing providers..
