Hi all

we have a large water tank in the loft that sits right in the middle of what would be useful usable space. I am keen to move it to one of the sides (up next to the gable wall).

A) do I need such a giant tank - is there a visible way to discern this?
B) how can I be sure by moving it that it it is suitably supported (doesn't fall thru the ceiling)

any thoughts appreciated

If you are talking about your loft cistern, then yes you need it, and yes it needs to be at least twice the capacity of your hot water cylinder. You can move it and all associated pipework into a new position if needed, lagging your extended pipework as required.

As long as the load is spread across the ceiling joists as it is now, and a sturdy base is used for your cistern, as it should be now, then its all good. Try to resite the cistern above a dividing wall below, as this will also help to spread the load, who could be around 260kgs. :)
