I look at my own house, where in the main I use one room, and for 4 months of the year have a 20 kW oil boiler to keep the room warm.
So to start, let me keep it simple, if I put an oil filled radiator in the living room, powered 00:30 to 05:30 how much would it save in oil? And how much would it cost in electric at 8.625p/kWh off-peak (32.277p/kWh peak) would it be worth it?
The main thoughts are Autumn and Spring where maybe the boiler would be turned on a month latter and off a month earlier. This summer I have realised how slowly the living room cools and warms up. So if at 05:30 the room is at 20ºC rather than 17ºC how much less oil will be used?
For 5 months of the year, we produce less with solar to what we use, so it is using off-peak which would help. Plus only heating one room.
Easy to measure electric used, but not oil saved, so thoughts please.
