Will you be using all this gear at the same time?

I don't mean, "have you suddenly sprouted several arms and heads", I mean, "will others be working in there the same time as you?"

If not, just count the (electrically) largest woodworking tool (Ohh, Matron!).

If you have rotatey equipment, you will need flu lighting with HF control gear.

Don't forget to allow for the spa pool and heating for the changing area for the dancing girls.

No just me.... yep HF lighting deffo... what about standby lighting?

Probably a good idea, in case your lights trip out whilst you've got the bandsaw/table saw running. You'd like to be able to hit the stop button without fumbling

Edit. this is about emergency lighting, not beer!

The first one of those alone could need a 3ph supply.

Yeah sort of close on the money there but they do tick in on single phase.... just.

 

[RF Lighting]

I've got a 50A type C circuit breaker / 3C 16.0mm² SWA single phase supply to my garage.

I'm running HF vapour proof fluorescents with LED emergency lighting.

I have a 10kVa CTE 110V transformer with 110V sockets dotted around the garage.
I have a table saw, compressor, 16A arc welder, chop saw, drill press, 32A socket for testing stage lighting dimmers etc. plus general hand held power tools such as a router, circular saw, jigsaw, sanders and drills etc.

I've never had a problem with the supply apart from dropping the 110V transformer direct on line from cold which took out both the local and submains supply OCPDs, but I modified it to be soft start after some helpful discussions on this forum!

My heating is a separate zone from the central heating in the house. If you're planning on electrical heating then this may have an impact on your supply design.

Yeah, hadn't considered the heating aspect. I would imagine some of the larger tools might cause inrush problems.. so question is would I need an electrician with more of a commercial background as opposed to domestic?

So now this next bit doesn't belong in the UK electrics forum... maybe it will get moved.. so for heating I am thinking along the lines of log burners linked to ufh with a backup gas boiler..
