Myson TRVs - are they any good?

The only trvs that I can get in my local hardware store, which is not a shed, are myson's. I've read in these posts that you should always try to install the more reliable (& presumably more expensive) TRVs. The guy in the shop said that they are one of the better ones.

What have your experiences been with them?

Thanks,
Bothy

Good enough for Pink Floyd to sing about......."Welcome. Myson, Welcome to the machine". From "Wish you were here" :?

Myson TRV are fine. I don't think that they are actually made by Myson anymore but they are still better than the real cheap ones. The more expensive ones have a faster response, less resistance to flow, tend to make less noise and don't seize up so easily. If properly fitted, Myson are about mid-range.

PTH,

I have just been to another store in town where they stock Heatline - but considering that these are about half the price of the Myson's - I'll give them a miss.

If properly fitted, Myson are about mid-range.

I've been trying to find out more info, on the web, about fitting them. Some people are saying to put them on the input side, and others on the output, also horizontal v's vertical mount. What would you suggest?

Thanks again

Generally TRV's should be fitted on the flow or inlet side, although most claim to be bi-directional and all will work to some degree on either end. I prefer to have the TRV head in the vertical plane unless the connections are at the top of the radiator. This is especially the case if you have small children about, horizontal heads are very convenient for standing on. Also, avoid horizontal heads if the pipework to the radiator is running horizontally below, the heat from the pipe will affect the operation of the valve.

I think that generally, people start off with good intentions of using the TRV to control the room temperature as the manufacturers intended, most resort to using them as an on/off control after a while. During surveys I usually find that TRVs are either in the fully open or fully closed position.

I have lost count of the number of times I ask people why they turn it full on or off. They always reply I was hot / cold. I then try to explain that if they would only just turn it to nearly full on or nearly off, then it will carry on operating rather than acting like a light switch.

I just want to say thanks for your help!

I managed to source some pegler terriers, and have just finished installing them today. There were only two minor leaks that were sorted out with a spanner :-)

I am currently bleeding the system and hopefully going live in about half an hour.

Oh happy days!

That's good to hear! ... however it didn't remain happy days for very long :-(

One of the rads was leaking from the bleed screw - sorted it out with ptfe.

I am now in a situation where half the rads don't heat up - looks like an air lock which I couldn't clear. The boiler needs servicing anyway so this morning I gave up and rang my plumber.

By the way, one of the cold rads heated up (very hot) when I switched all the others off. Lovely I thought to myself until I went to bleed it and no air or water came out. I took off the bleed screw and poked a nail in the hole just in case there was paint or something else clogging the hole but nada. Can anyone explain how the rad was hot if there was (apparently) no water in it pls?
