Good Evening all

So I’m fitting some new trellis to the top of my fence. Question is am I better using nails or screws? What’s the best size to use ?

Thanks
Tom

Use screws. Don't nail it because when you try to whack them in you'll damage your fence.

Length - it needs to be long enough to go through the trellis, and far enough into the fence to hold it without going through it. 30mm into the fence would be a minimum. The screw doesn't need threading all the way along, it can have no thread in the 30mm or so where it will be going through the trellis.

Torx head is good for driving, if you have a cordless drill with the right drill bit.

Example Product Description:

Turbo TX TX Double-Countersunk Multipurpose Screws 5mm x 100mm

Can be used in wood, plastic, masonry and 1mm sheet metal. TX recess for improved driving capability. Razor-sharp slash tip for an ultra-quick start with no pre-drilling required. Sharp deep thread designed for cutting cleanly through wood, allowing fast continuous insertion. Rifled shank reduces splitting and allows driving close to the edge. Double self-countersunk head, removing the need to counter-bore. Heat-treated carbon steel for extra strength, to reduce the chance of snapping. Wax-coated for improved insertion. Suitable for screwdrivers, combi drills and impact drivers. Supplied with TX screwdriver bit.
