1. My old tank has no cover and I want more space in the loft. Is 50 gal. the right size and can I use one of the types with no lid (like a box). Any advice appreciated. I've seen some in B&Q.

2. My CH feeder tank is full of sludge and with mould on top. What is the best way of clearing this as if I just open a drain valve below all that will go into the system?

3. Is there a newer type of feeder like the large tank (sealed box type)?

50 gal is usually adequate for most households with, say, one or even two showers. You can go smaller if you have a flat with limited water storage requirements but if there are two of you with a power shower, forget it; stick with the 50 gal which would be the minimum really.

Replacement CWS tanks are governed by both Building Regulations & local Water Authority bylaws so you cant just fit anything & definitely not one without a lid. I use a lot of these which come complete with all you need;

It must also be well supported!

Stick your hand in & use a large strainer to clean as much of it out as possible or draining will suck it through the system; sounds like you should get a heating engineer in to check & flush the system before refilling with inhibitor

Sorry don’t really understand your question, is this to do with the heating system header tank? Is this what you mean;

Polytank do both the type you are after, regards f+e tank ware glove and a mask when clearing any bacteria out fernox do a anti bacteria fluid chemical to cure the mold but isn't cheap.

Many thanks, I will carefully clear the header tank of water & sludge and then I am going to replace it.
