Evening all,

I currently have an Invensys UP2 timer in the kitchen, and the Honeywell (wireless) HCW80 thermostat in the hall. The plan is to replace both of these with the Nest 3rd Gen Thermostat.

The honeywell as stated above is wireless, and connects to a heatlink which is hard wired in to the boiler upstairs. The timer in the kitchen is hard wired and I have attached an image of the cabling that goes in to it.

Based on the instructions supplied with the Nest, I know that the cables are the following, but cannot figure out what the cable going in to '4' would be, can anyone help on this or can I just terminate this cable as it won't be needed?

N - Neutral
L - Live
1 - Satisfied (optional?)
2 - Common
3 - Call for Heat

I know there are many videos on the internet, which show people connecting the old cables up to the new Nest thermostat, but some have more cables and some less, so I don't want to start making assumptions.

Thank you for any advice offered.

If it helps, to get some answers... my boiler is a Condensing Boiler, and I cannot see anything in the Nest installation manual for these boilers... do I treat it the same as being a Combi boiler?

Also, does it need to be a 12v cable that runs from the heatlink down to the Nest controller, or does the Heatlink convert the electric current down to 12v regardless of the cable used?

For starters, everyone who's had a new boiler since 2005 (more or less) has a condensing one.

Next, do you think, that with poxy Nest and Hive threads spamming nearly every page of this section, that your installation is unique.

Use the sodding search button.

It's just wiring a fancy switch in where another switch is.

Dan,

I apologise that this has made you irritated, I did use the search button first, but didn't realise that all new boilers are condensing boilers so apologies for my ignorance to this.

In terms of the heat link, that can just replace the existing switch that's already in use then yeah from the boiler? Can you advise on the right cabling I need to use from the heat link down to the Nest thermostat?

TBF, Dan, the search facility us absolute garbage. I have tried searching in the past and given up..

But the wiring for a Nest is easy

You are looking at entirely the wrong information, and the old programmer numbering is not the same as the nest numbering. The wire connected to terminal 4 is not spare it is central heating on.

The wiring diagrams are supplied on the back of the old programmer and in the nest installation manual.

I think I have about figured it out, going to give the install a go this weekend... if no good, then I have someone coming next Thursday to quote me anyway, so I will just put the old kit back in place :)
