I have a new carpet that makes closing the door very
difficult. It is quite a heavy door, fitted with a
small weighted chain mechanism internal to the door
frame. Can anybody help me with these questions &
if so give some advise.

1) Will I be able to hand plane the bottom (with
door removed) or is this really difficult due
to cross grain of wood?

2) Should I buy a DIY electric plane for about
£40 and use this instead of hand plane?

3) I have a friend who is good at this, as he has
done it for a relative of mine, but I know it
will cost me £40-70, as he needs the work &
I want to keep a friend?

I would go for option 2 without a doubt. Better yet, if you can borrow an electric plane you'll save the 40 quid. You shouldn't have too many problems but watch out for the plane kicking the edge off, ie, don't go over the door edge from the inside.

You can hire a Door trimming saw - used for trimming a door without unhinging it.You might have to ring around as not all Hire tools shop stock it.I have hired one from below. You could ring them for nearer location in your area.

Electric plane is the answer.
Tackle job from each end to avoid splitting end grain.
Use only a small depth of cut where end grain is involved
