I am fitting a bedroom ceiling fan, not using any existing wiring, fan does not have lights. controlled through a combined on/off and variable speed control switch.
My question is- can this be wired as an additional lighting circuit as a spur from the lighting ring? Do I need to fit a fan isolator switch? If yes, why is this not required on a conventional light fixing, the potential hazard surely is much the same?
Sorry my 3 questions are..... :

The answers may well be contained in the manufacturers instructions. Generally, in my experience, ceiling fans for living rooms have relatively low powered low speed motors and can safely be installed from a lighting radial, but you must check to see what you have on that circuit already, and you should not need an isolator seperate from the switching unit on the fan. You will have to ensure that the earthing requirements are met - again look at the instruction manual - which can cause a problem if your house is of the age that considered an earth on a lighting circuit to be superfluous.
