Hi all,

I've just moved into my new house and I've decided to buy a brandy new central heating system, as my one seems a little past it. However, I've been living in the USA for the past five years, and having come back to the UK I don't know who's good, who's bad and so on. Having tried to look at my options (bearing in mind I've only been here a month or so and that's been tied up with moving, sorting out schools, doctors and so on) I've decided I'm confused and am appealing for recommendations. Has anyone used Northern Gas for central heating? They looked OK on their website (http://www.northerngasheating.com) but can anyone give me a personal experience? Cheers, Mandy.[/url]

The best solution is by personal recommendation.

Unfortunately, home owners dont know whats a good installation and what is not!

Installers can put in a totally rubbish installation and as long as they can start the next day, turn up on time and tidy up at the end of the day they get recommended.

Someone who puts in a properly specified system and does it technically perfectly will not get recommended just because he is in demand and cannot come because he is booked up for three weeks and has to arrive later or leave early because he is called to do repairs to a broken down boiler.

Anyone can 'look OK' on their website

You really need to get a personal recommendation. Try calling your local council, they may run a scheme where they have a list of 'vetted' tradesmen. Mine does and I'm on it 8)

I advise you use a local man rather than a national company and ask for references !!

Get 3 quotes from local Corgi fitters !
