during ongoing renovations we want to dig out part of a barn floor to create extra living space and want to put in a new concrete pad. what thickness is suitable for a domestic area, and if it were reinforced, by how much could the thickness be reduced?

If digging out soil then you would need to dig out between 350 and 450mm of spoil to accommodate the relevant insulation, concrete, hard core etc.

Using celotex or kingspan insulation and installing a trowelled slab will save a few mm.

Reinforcing will save nowt as the mesh requires coverage.
