New disk and Pads

Hi

I have recently fitted new rear disk's and new pad's and now my hand brake is coming up much further than before

Is this normal?

I can adjust it no probs but can't figure out why it has happened, no other work has been done on my car

You don't say which car it is, but worry ye not....after a few miles, and brake pedal presses, the rear pads should self adjust.
To help things I yank the handbrake off and on, whilst simultaneously pressing the brake pedal. Speeds things up a bit!
