New gas connection - how to route gas pipe?

Hi guys,

We've just received a £900 quote from SGN to fit a gas connection to our house (we have no existing connection) in preparation for a new central heating system. In the quote they state they will fit the box no more than 2 meters down the side of the house (we're semi-detached). Unfortunately for us, the "side" of our house is a small extension that contains our bathroom. We were originally hoping to put the boiler in our utility room.

It's hard to explain, so i've drawn a crude picture. Hopefully it helps

The question is - if we're forced to go into the house at this point how will we get the gas pipe into our utility room which is in a separate extension further along the side of the house? Would we need to route pipes through the bathroom somehow? (possibly under the bath, then under the stairs, and through the kitchen wall?)

Is this situation fairly common and relatively easy to deal with? Never had gas before so i'm not sure what is and what isn't a typical install. I've chucked away our storage heaters now, so we're committed!

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

It could run surface on the outside if there is a suitable route or perhaps under floor if you have suspended floors?

Interesting, would it be OK to run the pipe from the box, on the outside, all the way around to the utility room do you think? (in a large C shape) would it need to be at a certain height?

Unfortunately, the bathroom and utility rooms have concrete floors (the rest of the house is suspended)

Gas installers come across this type of problem on a regular basis, every job is different and working out pipe runs comes with the territory! Discuss the options with the installer and decide how you wish to proceed from there, gas does have the benefit, unlike water, whereby it can be run externally. I dont think there are any rules regarding height, main issue to to ensure pipe cannot be damaged. Dont worry, it is a minor detail and soon overcome.

It can come out of the box and run under the path if you get an RGI that can do the job.

But easier by far and so cheaper to run it round the wall!

Usually run about 200 mm above ground level.

Ok, that's brilliant! Shouldn't be anything to worry about then.

I think we'll probably opt for running the pipe around the walls on the outside surface. The gap between the bathroom/utility room is only used for storing our wheelie bins, and there's already a flue pipe for the toilet there anyway so it wouldn't make much difference cosmetically

Only problem with that plan is the tea leaves love shiny copper pipe hanging around on outside walls.

The only toilet that I have ever seen with a flue is a Blair Toilet!

heh, fair enough. I had no idea what the technical term was for the 'massive pipe' I was seeing so I just guessed, though I think it might actually be called a toilet vent pipe, or something like that

Not our place, but this is similar to what we have outside:

Dig the extra bit yourself beforehand give the guys a cup of tea speak to them nicely and 99% of them will put the box on utility room wall .
Had one the other week they put it right around the back for us which was prob an extra 8 0r 9 metres

Pipe is a Soil or vent pipe. Suspect SGN will 'mole' from road to meter position anyway, worth asking when they arrive on site if they'll put meter on utility wall, can only say no!
