New lintel needed

M

marsaday

I have exposed the wood work where i am going to put my new staircase.

The joist it will be built off goes into the wall where a window is below. I think this joist rests on the internal wooden lintel.

You can see they have extended the floor area so they can build a stud wall
just off this joist. The extra piece of flooring joists is bolted to the current joist, but also rest into the brick work at the side of the window.

I dont think i can build off this extended piece and so will have to go backwards and build from the floor joist (2x9").

This will mean extra weight will be placed on the internal wooden lintel.

So i assume i will need to replace this with a concrete lintel.

any advise ?

In a word yes, a 65 x 100 should suffice with 150mm bearing at each end

ok thanks. i will speak to BC and see what he says as well.

When i come to do it, how do i prop the joist resting on the lintel ?

Will a single acro sat on the stairs be ok ? or would i need to rip open the ceiling further across and get an acro in there and stand it on the ground floor ?

B control have said i dont need to change anything. The wooden lintel will be strong enough. I have removed a stud wall and will place a 7 rise flight there instead.

I will also be removing the extension bit as it wont be that good to build a flight off.
