Hi,

We've just had lots of new timber skirting / architraves fitted and we want to paint it mainly with white gloss.

Do we need to treat the scew/nail heads beofre filling and priming?

Someone told me to do the following:
1. Use knotting compund directly on the screw heads and any knots,
2. Prime where the screws/knots are. No need to prime the whole wood
3. Fill the holes (the advice being polyfilla is easier to sand then wood filler).
4. Undercoat all the wood
5. Paint with chosen colour.

Is this advice right to follow? Admittedly I may have got some of it mixed up so hence me wanting to check.

Thanks in advance

1 Use knotting solution on the knots
2 Make sure the nail/screw heads are below the surface of the wood and
fill using Brummer or a two part wood filler. Both easier to rub down
than Pollifilla IMO
3 Prime all bare wood inc the filled and rubbed down holes
4 De-nib using a fine grade paper after giving it a second fill with Fine
Surface filler if required. Once painted white you will probably see
more holes and knocks that you couldn't see before
5 Undercoat one or two coats depending on finish. De-nib between coats
6 Topcoat as required

The definative answer  unless someone else says different  bet they do    ;)

cheers for the advice - i'll follow it.

Can you get the brummer wood filler at the DIY places like B&Q or do you need to go to a decorator's centre? Cheers
