Advice please, am total diy novice. Have just had a bedroom replastered and new skirtingboard put on, all good. The thing is, the skirting now covers half the ventilation hole for the room - on the old chimney breast. Is this a problem? Should the skirting be cut down to uncover the rest of the vent hole, if so how? or are we okay to just put a grille over the partial hole.

you could do as you have said, but i think it would be a bit unsightly?
can you not remove vent and make the hole higher up and replace vent so it sits on top of the skirting?

Yes, that `ll do ok. It`s not a vent for the room, but a vent for the chimney  to keep a bit of air moving up the flue and stop damp in flue. Lots of threads about it
