Hi
I am putting in a new steering rack on my ford escort 1.4L 1993, and need some help. I have removed the two retaining bolts of the rack, but now not sure how to remove the rack from the steering wheel housing under the bonnet (you know the little shank thingy!) Will it just pull out or do i need to undo a clip or something. I am trying to pull but it aint budging and i dont really want to pull too hard incase io break something.

what do you know????

Remove plastic housing, if present, 2 phillips screws, rotate steering wheel until universal joint pinch bolt can be removed, then slide joint off splines.

and this should then alow me to slide rack pinion out of housing for full removal?

do i have to remove plastic housing around the steering wheel (colomn) area inside car?

Sorry tonygeorge, you've probably got it out by now, but anyway:-

do i have to remove plastic housing around the steering wheel (colomn) area inside car?

No.

and this should then alow me to slide rack pinion out of housing for full removal?

Yes.

You say you have removed the rack retaining bolts, you should be able to see the universal joint screwed to the splined shaft at the top of the rack. I 've just realised the model year, so I'm not sure if the plastic cover is present on yours', but all this work should be executable from within the engine compartment.
