Hi all

I've recently had some turf layed about 6 months ago. I've noticed that the grass is a bit thin in places. Is this normal? Will it thicken up over time? Is there anything I can do to achieve a thicker uniformed look? As the other half isnt happy with it.

Also there are a few yellowish small patches in places. Can anyone advise what the cause could be?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have any pets?

Turf should never really be thin unless its awful quality. Seeded lawns will of course be thin for a year.

photos would help

I have dogs but they are segregated from the grass by a fence. Next door has 4 cats and they do access the garden.

I'll try to get some photos for the weekend. Its hammering it down with rain at the moment.

brown patches on a new lawn is often animal urine. was it seeded or turfed?

A little bit of general fertiliser will help. Phosphate and Potash especially, with a little nitrogen. You will be all 3 in one bag, shake it on by hand evenly.

A farm supply shop will be the cheapest in larger bags (50kg) for bigger areas. And don't over water or let it dry out, as the roots will be temperamental until well established

Oh, and get rid of the cats you decide

Another common issue with lawns is mowing them too short. It depends a bit on the type of grass you have down, but I've found with mine it's better to mow it slightly longer and more regularly.
