We are replacing wood flooring in our kitchen. We took up a small section and it appears that the original floor was installed using 2 X 2 sleepers approximately 1 foot apart over an existing 1 X 4? plank subfloor. Because the new flooring must be at the same level due to it butting up to an adjacent room, my question is: should we remove the sleepers and build up using plywood or just add new sleepers where necessary at new floor plank joints?
thanks, for any help or advise

Its not good practice to have layered floors like you describe. Best practice would be to lift all flooring down to the bare joists.

Are the 1" x 4" planks you describe, rough sawn and laid diagonal with 1/4" spacings? Or are they tight fitted tongue and groove? Historic T&G were often Beech or Oak or some other valuable lumber.

What material is the proposed new flooring?

boristaylor,

Pity that you didn't post on the 4th - what with being in Abe Lincoln's state.
Probably, just shading Washington as the finest president of them all.
