Many years ago (last time I checked), a new worktop would arrive with 'gash' edges- ie not covered all the way to the end with surface; rather having about 10mm chipboard exposed, needing trimming.

Is this still the case? Thanks.
 
Depends on the brand and type . Some square edged top come with finished edge both ends to allow butt joining.
