Newbie needs help...How do you know if boiler has water

This is my first time posting and my first week of any plumbing DIY. I got motivated by reading some of the threads and this week fixed my overflow by changing the ballcock but I think I may have messed up on my last adventure. I attempted to fix a leak on towel radiator in downstairs bathroom...by turning off water and then undoing radiator nut and used a towel to guide water into a bucket un till it had all gone. Not sure if that's me fully draining everything but a good two plastic bin fills came out.

I fixed radiator as the "onion" as i now know it, was damaged so I replaced and then turned water back on. All was ok until I tried heating tonight on model "ideal w2000" as boiler light not staying on.

My gut tells me I haven't filled the system correctly, after draining earlier. But then again i am a complete novice and need some help as have the mother in law down and two small boys to keep warm.

Check the pressure if its a combi.
Oh and it's a union nut not an onion

.update....I adjusted a setting on the Grundfos super selectric 15-60 which was sitting next to the boiler....I went from a speed 1 to 2 for about 5 seconds and then the boiler fired up and the heating came on. I turned it back to 1 and that was about an hour ago and heating still working ok.

Not sure exactly what I did..or if things will stay ok....any idea what I did ?

Its not a combi.

Pilot works fine but main burner as you put it wasn't kicking in until I adjusted the grudfos ...not sure exactly what that does

Maybe you had an airlock that giving the pump a little more oomph shifted. If all OK on 1, leave pump on that setting.

Did you tie up F&E ball valve or isolate supply to it? If you drained your system, or part of, did you bleed the pump after?

Onions or olives. Making me feel hungry!

Grundfos is the pump, which circulates the water around the system. Possibly a small airlock somewhere that was preventing the water from circulating, turn the pump speed up may have been sufficient to dislodge the air, and get the water moving. If all is well, leave it alone now!

I was referring to when you partially drained system to fix towel rail. But reading again, looks like you may have just drained the rail, not any pipework, so no worry.
