Just installed new bottom rail, oak handrail newel post etc.. just left with pyramid oak flat newel cap to go on top bottom and half newel. What is the best way to fix onto newel, surely glue on its own is not sufficiant.. should i use dowels drilled into both newel and cap.?? or is there a special fixing?? at a bit of a loss here so help would be appreciated. (the cap is flat on the underside not the acorn pegged type) thanks JB

Glue will do.
Simple wood glue.
