1980 ish house and one of the newel posts is moving quite a bit.
Thought it would be simple to add some steel brackets to a joist but it is a little congested see second photo.
The newel is not sitting on the thick joist!
I thought I would be able to screw through the thick joist into the newel but the newel is far from flat where it is cut away so can’t pack the space.
Second thought was fix to the thinner joist to the right of the thick one but access is a little difficult.
Current thinking is to wedge a piece of wood into the gap between the newel and the end of the thin joist but there won’t be much stopping the newel moving the other way ( although I could strengthen the top riser).
The thick joist ends about a foot into the landing (left in first photo)
Yes the black thing is an RSJ supporting an upstairs wall.
