Perhaps someone will know the answer to this?
Whenever I shop at either Newey's or WF's, the salesperson always overrides the chip and pin function on the card terminal, and asks me to sign instead. Why would they do this? is it so that criminals can have an easy time shopping at the above places using counterfeit cards etc?
When I query it with the salesman, explaining it is a security risk, they just say "the management tell them they must override the security system when accepting card payments" - perhaps this is why they seem to be more expensive then normal these days - it's probably to cover the very high card fraud losses that they will incur.
