We've just had the artexing flattened and the ceiling skimmed over after a bit of a water leak. We had applied a bit of stain stop to the artex where the water had stained the ceiling before it was plastered. The plasterer recommended we stain stop the whole ceiling again before we emulsion it. Just questioning whether this is necessary on bare plaster as it seems to be difficult to work with since it's so greasy and sticky? Also, wondered whether it would be easy to emulsion over as opposed to bare plaster since it seems to leave a shiny surface.

I'm tempted to go straight in with the emulsion as I can't see the stains coming through as we treated them before plastering.

Greasy and sticky? What are you using?
Zinsser bulls eye 123 two coats water based each coat touch dry in about an hour on a good day. (y)

This is what I have; Polycell One Coat Stain Stop. Seems very gloss paint like. Think I would get it all over try to paint a full ceiling with that. I'll take a look at Zinsser. Thanks a lot @footprints

Just checked. It looks like it's exactly what I'm looking for.

If the stain has gone and the leak is definitely fixed then just mist coat as normal. No need for extra cost if not needed

That's what I was thinking @Chivas69 but the Zinsser does sound good for other things we have going on as well.
