Not very scientific, "some knowledge" of Gaelic.
Excluding immigrants, 100% of Irish people speak English as their first language.
It is a well known fact that the number of Irish speakers in the Republic of Ireland and N.Ireland has been grossly exaggerated by the Irish language lobby in order to scam money in the form of funding for culture/language ****** from the EU.

UK Government acts on Identity and Language legislation for Northern Ireland
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland will today (Wednesday 25 May) introduce legislation in Parliament that will deliver a balanced package of measures for Northern Ireland on identity and language.From:Northern Ireland Office and The Rt Hon Brandon Lewis CBE MPPublished25 May 2022
- The Identity and Language (Northern Ireland) Bill will deliver measures to promote and respect Northern Ireland’s diverse national, cultural and linguistic identities.
- It will provide for the recognition and protection of the Irish language and the development of the Ulster Scots and Ulster British tradition.
- It will create two Commissioners and an Office of Identity and Cultural Expression, which will benefit everyone in Northern Ireland.
The Irish language, which will be granted official status in Northern Ireland, will be protected by a new Commissioner, tasked with developing best practice standards for public authorities to follow.
These standards, which will be subject to approval, will help to facilitate interaction between Irish-speaking service users and public bodies.
A further commissioner will work to enhance and develop the language, arts and literature associated with the Ulster Scots and Ulster British tradition, and will promote Ulster Scots services provided by public authorities.
Following Executive failure to progress the legislation through the Northern Ireland Assembly, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland committed to bringing the legislation through Parliament, which will be delivered today.
In addition to the legislation, the UK Government has also announced the delivery of two of its own New Decade, New Approach commitments.
The Government is officially giving recognition to Ulster Scots as a National Minority under the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, a status already accorded to Irish, Welsh and Scots, and since 2014, Cornish, among others.
The Government will also provide £4 million to An Ciste Infheistíochta Gaeilge, the Irish Language Investment Fund1am

Are the numbers of Ulster-Scots relevant, though?
I think it's important to maintain ethnic languages and dialects as a way to keep traditions within the culture alive, especially as an all pervasive way to speak English becomes more homogenous in our country.
How many people speak Kernow? I've no idea, but the language was thought to have died out at the end of the 18th century when the last native speaker died, but more than a few people in Cornwall believe it's important to revive this language as a means to keep their identity seperate from the rest of Britain. Culturally, they owe their origins to the people of Brittany, not an Anglo-Saxon tradition.
Gaelic can be split between 'P' Celts and 'Q' Celts: Irish and Welsh, respectively. An easy way to demonstrate the difference is in spelling the name: Lugh Lamhada, in Irish, and Llew Llaw Gyffes, in Welsh. Same chap in the legends but the way people spoke the name meant differences can be seen in their origins diverging during the wave of Bronze Age migrations. Llud was another version, still seen in place names around England today, and before the Romans came along, the original name of London: 'Ludd Dun'.
From these migrations it can be said that settlers took Gaelic to Scotland from Antrim in Ireland over 1500 years ago and the culture crossed back and forth for hundreds of years before the Vikings came along to add their own language into the mix.
That'd be fun.

Can't see the EU being enamoured with this kind of talk when their reason for being is to break down nation states and make us one homonogist gloop.

The eu was started to prevent Europe descending into war again and its been pretty successful until pootin saw an opportunity to fund and influence those who want to break up europe. Still waiting for a proper inquiry into russsian influence over the tory party.
This is where the multi culturalism comes in to divide and rule. Genius that should stop the cultural divide.

Anybody who has been to France, Germany, Spain, Italy etc would know they are about as far away from being a homologous group as is humanly possible.
