I have a Worcester combi boiler (9.24 I think) which I am told is about 12 years old. The hot water has stopped firing up when the tap is turned on unless the central heating is on as well. A plumber did squirt it with some WD40 which worked for a couple of weeks but now it has stopped working again.

Any ideas how to solve the problem properly or does this suggest a need for a new boiler??

I agree with the above. However, although the diaphragm is the most likely culprit and are replacable, I've found it more expensive but easier and a better repair to change the whole assembly.

Careful there are a couple of 9.24's. Different diverters. The diaphragm looks a much easier job on one of them.

One is a CORGI job as you have to remove the gas valve!

At the age of this boiler some of the joints may be difficult to get apart.

However I saw one a few days ago that althouth 18 years old was almost as new!
