To "spike" a supply means firing a steel chisel into the cable, don't half make a bang if the cables live.
Especially on HV (I have seen it)
With the spike guns I have seen used with a small gunpoweder charge, it's difficult to tell if the bang was due to the spikegun going off or the protection operating. This was 11kv UG. Never seen one fired into a live cable so can't verify.
