No Lintel, wall cracks

I ask because if the same clowns that built a concrete block (not a thing in the 30s) wall on timber joists did the extension which involved knocking the downstairs back wall out, I'd have serious misgivings about the quality of support offered to the upstairs wall where the extension was added. Have you seen any indications of problems there?
Loads of partition block walls (of the period) were built like that, usually off a sole plate fixed to the floor joists. Same in my house. I bet that door casing is only 100mm wide, meaning the partition blocks are your typical 3" fellas.

You can put wood on top of masonry, not the other way round! This thread is a good example of why not.
Lots of houses have wooden lintels, even some modern ones. Mitigating the inevitable shrinkage is the important bit.
As I said, thousands upon thousands of homes up and down the UK have first floor 3" block partition walling. Issues usually arise when folk do internal alterations.

Yeah OK, a lintel was pretty normal. Had the same in our old bungalow, was only holding up a few courses over a 3-foot span. But sticking a wall in the middle of floor joists seems crazy. You're putting something heavy that can't flex on top of something that definitely will bend under load.

I've seen them just built off the floor boards without even a sole plate.
