So I needed to change the gate valve from the cylinder to the hot water (yellow) as it was continually spinning.
I thought I had drained all the hot water (turned off the gate valve from the cold water feed from the attic - purple) but it seems as the spinning valve was blocked it just gave the impression of being drained.
This meant took the valve off and huge amount of water coming out green pipe.
This water was hot. Managed to get the gate valve on closed but I didn't manage to get the olive on the pipe before hand.
What do people reckon - no leaks at present at all, likely to be ok for a while?

It's surprising that you got any seal if there was no olive.
Are you sure there wasn't an old olive already there from the old gate valve? If that's the case, that is what is providing the seal and, although not ideal, it's probably going to be OK
