Installed a new cylinder today complete with a new immersion and stat.

As I have an air lock in the CH/DHW system I thought I would make use of the immersion heater, it goes "tink tink tink etc etc.

If I apply a bit of pressure to the stat thats within the immersion heater cover the noise stops, also I got a belt off the heating element terminal  so don't forget to be careful when you choose to work with the electric switched on

So does any one know why the stat is noisy.

expansion and contraction of the metal either of the stat itself, or the sleeve it sits in.. try putting some vaseline or similar on the stat before pushing it into the sleeve.. ( not sure on the thermal conductivity of vaseline, might also try copper slip.. )

Thanks for the reply, I tried some heat sink paste that I use when replacing external thermisters but still got the noise.

got another new thermostat,

stuck it in,

the new one was as noisy as the other!

Realized that the thing was rattling around in the immersed blind ended tube so i took out the brand new one,

Bent the not quite as new over the cylinder and bobs my uncle.
