Noisey Starter motor

Hello all,
I have looked in the haynes manual but cant find a fault description.
The problem is my starter motor occasionally makes a loud scraping noise at the point after the engine has started and i release the ignition key. it usually lasts for about a second afterwards.

Is the starter about to fail?

it's an x reg clio.

Its not releasing properly remove motor and clean up pinion engagement mechanism.

what causes a sticking startermotor,sometimes when i turn the key i just get a click from the starter and it wont turn the engien over.

That sounds like the solenoid sticking. Can clean them up but usually a new starter is the best way forward.

New starter motor Sooner rather than later, if this carries on you will be looking at a new flywheel too ....... Which isn't going to make the job any cheaper
