Have a zanussi wash machine - 3yrs old - still current model, gets heavy use 7-10 washes a week, sounds like a jumbo jet taking off in spin (very loud rumble. Gotten worse, - drum seems to have more movement now, also started to get brown spotty marks on white clothes, that don't come off easily. Any suggestions what might be wrong - Bearings ? - easy to change? - anyone able to help? I am quite proficient in repairs.

with the machiene off are you able to lift the inner drum (stainless steel one) up and down? (grab it by the flange and see does it "wobble")

Chances are it will. this does mean that the bearings have "gone" I have seen them changed by a certain washing m/c company engineer,(had mine done) it took just over an hour, he used "specialist tools" to change it and also said that the "spider" (that is the thing the drum bolts onto that then goes through the bearings) has to be changed too if not the seal for the new bearings will be damaged.

To me it looked like an easy job if you have the riht tools (he had a special "bearing puller" that took both sets of bearings out in 5 minutes flat, he did say some engineers do not use this special tool but it is quicker and easier)

Oh i did not mention he tok the m/c completely to pieces to do it.

In short i would pay for some one who knows what they are doing to do it (but he did make it look easy, but he does it for a living and it took as i said an hour)

all understood - yes I did ring a company today and they said something about the "spider" needing to be repalced. One company said they wont touch it cause its a big job, the other quoted me anything between £150 - £200 which sounds expensive, especially when the parts are £15 for the bearing + £25 for the spider. Do you think this sunds expensive.

Anyway thank you for your reply - perhaps let me know what u think to prices quoted.

i think it does sound expensive, if its going to be nearer the £200 pound mark i would buy a new one,and it wouldn,t be a zanussi,i prefer indesit and 3 year old for a washing machine is not very old and i certainly wouldnt expect to be replacing the bearings at that age,we had 12 year out of the last washer wich was an indesit and in that time the progammer was replaced and i think we had a pump on it,no trouble with the bearings though,it was the door that broke on it in the end...

thanks thats what I thought, and yes v concerned thats its only 3 yrs old, cost me about £350 - (its a washer dryer). I'll shop around for a better quote. Ta for your time.

The engineer also said that if i wasn't under contract that he would have suggested that the m/c be written off because although the parts themselves are cheap his time isn't.

I was also curious to know why the bearings went, he then asked how much washing i put in on a load, so i showed him, and he said that to be honest i was overloading it, which causes the drum to spin off centre (very slightly) which in turn wears the seal out, water gets in and ruins the bearings, he said that if i can see the back of the drum when it is loaded that is fine (you couldn't when i showed him how much i put in)

Thank you Breezer!! My girlfriend is always overloading our washing machine; I keep telling her it'll bugger the machine but she thinks I'm just being paranoid! Now I have corroborating evidence! Nice one.

dont b----r about- buy a new one like I just did. Not worth the time and effort. If youre quick- get one in the sales.Suggest Hoover! But British.
Good luck.
